Matching zooplankton abundance and environment in the South Indian Ocean and Southern Ocean ArchiMer
Godet, Claire; Robuchon, Marine; Leroy, Boris; Cotté, Cedric; Baudena, Alberto; Da Silva, Ophélie; Fabri-ruiz, Salomé; Lo Monaco, Claire; Sergi, Sara; Koubbi, Philippe.
Distinguishing regions based on the geographic distribution of both abiotic factors and living organisms is an old but still actual central issue for biogeographers. In the Southern Ocean, the few existing regionalization studies have been carried out either at very large scales or on the relatively small region around the Sub-Antarctic islands of Kerguelen and the Crozet archipelagos. However, regionalization studies at meso-scales (100–300 km) covering the Indian part of the Southern Ocean and adjacent South Indian Ocean are scarce. These waters, ranging from the Subtropical to the polar region, are home to large populations of well-studied top predators that depend on the biomass of less known mid-trophic level species such as zooplankton. To fill those...

Metabarcoding on planktonic larval stages: an efficient approach for detecting and investigating life cycle dynamics of benthic aliens ArchiMer
Couton, Marjorie; Comtet, Thierry; Le Cam, Sabrina; Corre, Erwan; Viard, Frédérique.
High-throughput sequencing (HTS) technologies offer new promise to support surveillance programs targeting marine non-indigenous species (NIS). Metabarcoding might surpass traditional monitoring methods, for example through its ability to detect rare species, a key feature in early detection of NIS. Another interest of this approach is the identification of organisms difficult to identify based on morphology only (e.g., early developmental stages), making it relevant in the context of management programs. Because many marine benthic NIS have a biphasic benthopelagic life cycle, targeting their pelagic larval stages in zooplankton may allow early detection and assessment of their establishment and potential spread. We illustrate this approach with an...

Modèle couple dynamique -écologie pour la lagune de Bizerte OceanDocs
Bejaoui, B.; Harzallah, A.; Moussa, M.; Chapelle, A..
This work concerns the development of a three dimensional hydroecological model based on two nutrient elements, nitrogen and phosphorus. The hydrodynamic model is 3D forced by monthly climatic data of NOAA. The ecological model was developed based on two nutrient elements, nitrogen and phosphorus in interaction with the phytoplankton and zooplancton. The ecological model is made up with two compartments, the water column and the sediment layer. Eight state variables are used to characterize the water column and six state variables for the sediment layer. As a first application, the model was tested on the Bizerte Lagoon. A comparison between simulations and observations showed that the model can reproduce with satisfactory way the observations carried out...

Modelling ecological change over half a century in a subtropical estuary: impacts of climate change, land-use, urbanization and freshwater extraction ArchiMer
Condie, Scott A.; Hayes, Donna; Fulton, Elizabeth A.; Savina, Marie.
The Clarence River Estuary is the largest estuary in southeast Australia, with an extensive floodplain encompassing multiple river channels and a large coastal lagoon. It is the focus of major commercial and recreational fisheries and there is pressure to divert its freshwater inputs for agricultural and domestic uses. We used a spatial biogeochemical model to simulate the variability and evolution of this system on timescales from days to decades over the past half century. Like most tropical and subtropical estuaries, the Clarence River Estuary is strongly influenced by river discharge, sediment and nutrient loads. Given the high nutrient loads arriving from the upper catchment, plankton biomasses in the model were typically limited by flushing through...

Modelling secondary production in the Norwegian Sea with a fully coupled physical/primary production/individual-based Calanus finmarchicus model system ArchiMer
Hjøllo, Solfrid Sætre; Huse, Geir; Skogen, Morten D.; Melle, Webjørn.
The copepod Calanus finmarchicus is the dominant species of the meso-zooplankton in the Norwegian Sea, and constitutes an important link between the phytoplankton and the higher trophic levels in the Norwegian Sea food chain. An individual-based model for C. finmarchicus, based on super-individuals and evolving traits for behaviour, stages, etc., is two-way coupled to the NORWegian ECOlogical Model system (NORWECOM). One year of modelled C. finmarchicus spatial distribution, production and biomass are found to represent observations reasonably well. High C. finmarchicus abundance is found along the Norwegian shelf-break in the early summer, while the overwintering population is found along the slope and in the deeper Norwegian Sea basins. The timing of the...

Neritization of the plankton fauna in the Mediterranean basin IBSS Repository
Kovalev, A. V.; Mazzocchi, M. G.; Kideys, A. E.; Skryabin, V. A..
The plankton fauna neritization in the Mediterranean Seas basin is discussed. Neritization is an increase of the neritic species percentage in zooplankton composition from the Mediterranean to the Black and Sea of Azov; It has been shown that the percentage of oceanic species decreases considerably in the Mediterranean Sea, adjacent to Gibraltar strait if compared with the Atlantic region, and the share of neritic – oceanic and neritic species increases correspondingly. Some of these species were observed in the open sea. In the Black Sea, oceanic species are absent. Neritic – oceanic and neritic species, which came there from the Mediterranean Sea, are distributed through out the area. The shallow-water straits between the seas and considerable changes in...

Nutrition chez des copepodes en milieu lagunaire mediterraneen en fonction de la concentration en particules et de la temperature ArchiMer
Gaudy, R; Pagano, M.
The zooplankton of an eutrophic brackish lagoon (Etang de Berre), near Marseille (France) was studied during an annual cycle. It was characterized by large populations of a pelagic copepod (Acartia tonsa ). Grazing on natural particles by this species was investigated. Adults were able to use an extended range of particle sizes, but showed selectivity for particles concentration was observed (14 mu m). Temperature and particles concentration appear to modify the selectivity behavior. Juvenile stages could also catch particles of various size but did not show the same selectivity for the peak particles as adults. Daily food ration was high comparatively to open-sea copepods. Taking into account several results obtained on food ration, egg production and...

on the distribution of zooplankton assemblaces in abu-qir bay, alexandria, egypt OceanDocs
Zakaria, H.Y..
Abu Qir Bay is a shallow semi-circular basin lying 35 Km east of Alexandria city. The bay is facing the problem of pollution which discharged into the bay from different sources; El-Tabia Pumping Station (TPS), the outlet of Idku Lake and the Rosetta mouth of the Nile River. Quantitative and qualitative studies of zooplankton community in Abu Qir Bay were performed seasonally during 2004. Fourteen stations were selected to represent the different habitats in the bay.The seasonal variations of zooplankton standing stock in Abu Qir Bay indicated that, the highest count (average 87.1x103 ind/m3) occurred during spring, while the lowest (average 44.2x103 ind/m3) was recorded in summer. The average zooplankton count during the period of study amounted to...

Oyster Farming, Temperature, and Plankton Influence the Dynamics of Pathogenic Vibrios in the Thau Lagoon ArchiMer

Vibrio species have been associated with recurrent mass mortalities of juvenile oysters Crassostrea gigas threatening oyster farming worldwide. However, knowledge of the ecology of pathogens in affected oyster farming areas remains scarce. Specifically, there are no data regarding (i) the environmental reservoirs of Vibrio populations pathogenic to oysters, (ii) the environmental factors favoring their transmission, and (iii) the influence of oyster farming on the persistence of those pathogens. This knowledge gap limits our capacity to predict and mitigate disease occurrence. To address these issues, we monitored Vibrio species potentially pathogenic to C. gigas in 2013 and 2014 in the Thau Lagoon, a major oyster farming region in the coastal French...

Parent-to-offspring transfer of sublethal effects of copper exposure: Metabolic rate and life-history traits of Daphnia RChHN
FERNÁNDEZ-GONZÁLEZ,MAURICIO A; GONZÁLEZ-BARRIENTOS,JAVIER; CARTER,MAURICIO J; RAMOS-JILIBERTO,RODRIGO.
In ecological communities, pollution driven perturbations exert immediate effects on sensitive individuals, but these effects may be transmitted among interacting organisms and spread over the community through several paths. This makes the assessment and prediction of ecological consequences of pollution difficult. The propagation of perturbation effects among organisms can be horizontal among organisms that coexist in space and time, and vertical among organism that belong to different generations. The latter process is poorly understood, in particular in planktonic organisms facing metal pollution. In this study we evaluate the vertical transfer of effects driven by sublethal copper stress on the heartbeat rate, somatic growth and fertility of Daphnia...

Particle flux in the Rainbow hydrothermal vent field (Mid-Atlantic Ridge): Dynamics, mineral and biological composition ArchiMer
Khripounoff, Alexis; Vangriesheim, Annick; Crassous, Philippe; Segonzac, Michel; Colaco, Ana; Desbruyeres, Daniel; Barthelemy, Roxane.
In order to provide information about the export and the distribution of hydrothermal particulate material to the surrounding deep ocean, four moorings were deployed in the vicinity of the hydrothermal Rainbow vent field (Mid-Atlantic Ridge, 36 degrees 14'N, 2250 m depth). The first mooring was a sediment trap with a current meter deployed at 2 m from a chimney of the Rainbow vent field and 1.5 m above the bottom (a.b.) for 16 days. It represented the reference for the initial composition of particles produced by the vent. The total mean mass particle flux (6.9 g m(-2) d(-1)) was distinctly higher than the flux measured at the shallower hydrothermal vents on the MAR segment. This particulate flux showed a high temporal variation at the scale of a few days...

PCB concentrations in plankton size classes, a temporal study in Marseille Bay, Western Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Tiano, Marion; Tronczynski, Jacek; Harmelin-vivien, Mireille; Tixier, Celine; Carlotti, Francois.
PCB levels in plankton were investigated in the Bay of Marseille, Western Mediterranean Sea, between September 2010 and October 2011. Concentrations of PCB congeners (CB 18, CB 52, CB 101, CB 118, CB 138, CB 153, CB 180) were determined in three plankton size-classes (60–200, 200–500 and 500–1000 μm) together with different parameters: chlorophyll content, plankton dry-weight biomass, carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios and plankton-community structure. The ∑PCB7 concentrations ranged between 14.2 and 88.1 ng g−1 d.w., for all size classes and all sampling periods. The results do not show the biomass dilution effect and indicate moderate but significant biomagnification with plankton trophic position estimated by δ15N signatures. Equilibrium with...

Pheopigment dynamics, zooplankton grazing rates and the autumnal ammonium peak in a Mediterranean lagoon ArchiMer
Collos, Yves; Husseini Ratrema, Julie; Bec, Béatrice; Vaquer, André; Hoai, Thong Lam; Rougier, Claude; Pons, Virginie; Souchu, Philippe.
The dilution technique was used to estimate chlorophyll and pheopigment, net and gross production as well as zooplankton grazing over a 12-month period in a coastal lagoon in Southern France. Chlorophyll a (Cha) based gross growth rates of phytoplankton ranged from undetectable in February to 2.6 day(-1) in June, corresponding to 3.8 divisions per day. Cha-based grazing rates ranged from undetectable in February to 1.1 d(-1) in June. The seasonal growth pattern of picoplankton was similar to that of the whole community, with a peak in July, corresponding to four divisions per day. Grazing processes represented from 20 to 150% of the phytoplankton daily growth, and the grazing pressure was stronger on small phytoplankton cells than on larger cells. Gross...
